Limiting the use of Disposable Plastic Bags
In recent years, the use of disposable plastic bags has reached epidemic levels in China. According to a study by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, 3 billion of plastic bags were used every day in 2008.
The widespread use of plastic bags has given rise to a host of problems. First, plastic bags have caused serious environmental problems. Millions of used plastic bags are thrown away without proper treatment. They dance in the wind, flutter on treetops and float in rivers, becoming an eyesore. Even worse, plastic bags pose serious a threat to aquatic creatures. It is reported that every year many rare fishes were killed in the Yangtze River because they mistook plastic bags for food. Worst of all, plastic bags are potentially hazardous to people’s health. Studies have found that a large percentage of plastic wrapping contain poisonous chemicals and therefore are unsuitable for carrying food.
